Universities in Holland attract British students. The University of Maastricht is actively recruiting British students for the coming academic year. Around 160,000 British students are expected to miss out on a university place in their own country.
Maastricht is taking an opportunity to raise the profile of its university programmes. Jeanine Gregersen of Maastricht University says the British students will get excellent education in Maastricht, not just in their own language, but also in an international environment. It's striking just how many of the students are British.
"The University of Maastricht is well-known for its international allure. We try to make the student groups as international as possible, and that means having British students too.
We are also active in countries outside Europe, in particular China, India and Turkey. If we look at the figures in the Dutch clearing system Studielink, we can see there are almost 17,000 international students.
But not all of them will turn up, because nowadays students are critical and apply to different universities. They make their choice at the very last minute."
